The objectives of this study were to evaluate the clinical outcomes of single-implant-supported complete removable dental prostheses (CERD) and to compare the success rates of implants with 6-mm or 8-mm abutments and periodontally impacted and non-imputed or non-compromised biotypes. Forty-two patients (28 women, 14 men; mean age: 53 years) were included in this clinical and radiographic study. Sixty-seven implants were placed, with 1 or 2 CERDs. Three implants were lost before prosthetic loading, but the remaining 64 implants were placed in optimal locations with a 6-mm or 8-mm abutment, a 3-mm or 4-mm periodontal biotype, and either 1 (n = 17) or 2 (n = 47) CERDs. Prosthetic and osseointegration success, biologic and prosthetic complications, and changes in marginal bone levels were assessed after a mean follow-up period of 29 months (range: 10 to 54 months). Sixty-three of the 64 implants were osseointegrated; 1 implant was removed because of a bone defect; and 2 implants were replaced. Five of 17 CERDs were lost, and the rest remained in situ. Prosthetic and biologic success were 100%. Marginal bone loss was measured at 2 sites per implant and found to be 0.30 ± 0.66 mm for the group with a 6-mm abutment and 0.23 ± 0.67 mm for the group with an 8-mm abutment. There were no statistically significant differences in the marginal bone changes or the success rates between the 3 groups. Within the limitations of this study, the results indicated that single-implant-supported CERDs with a 6-mm or 8-mm abutment and a 3-mm or 4-mm periodontal biotype had a success rate of 100% and bone loss of 0.23 ± 0.67 mm and 0.30 ± 0.66 mm, respectively, over a mean follow-up period of 29 months.
